Reaching Children Beyond the Clinic
Finding and Following up with Malnourished Children with a Nutrition Community Liaison
With the support of generous founding board members, Meds & Food for Kids has added a Nutrition Community Liaison (NCL) to our team. Welcome, Yaquis Augustin!
Many families learn about our partner clinics by word of mouth. When a child’s health declines due to severe malnutrition, their chance of survival depends on not only reaching a clinic to be treated, but knowing it’s even an option. Yaquis will travel through communities to find children who need treatment and refer their families to clinics to reduce the gap between knowledge and access.
A Nutrition Community Liaison also helps ensure children remain healthy after treatment. By conducting follow-ups in the months after a malnourished child is cured, Yaquis can support caregiver efforts and monitor the child for signs of regression. As vital as treatment is, so is continued health.
Meds & Food for Kids and Yaquis will also support nutrition and health education with clinics and schools to prevent malnutrition and illness. Families, teachers, nurses, and community members will be better equipped with skills and awareness to keep their children healthy.
Thank you to all who gave to support the addition of this crucial role to MFK’s mission. Because of you, our impact will continue to grow and more children will thrive.
