Haiti: America's Neighbor
“The history of Haiti will break your heart. Knowing it, the weak will despair, but the caring will strive to break the chains of tragedy.”
Ramsey Clark
Former U.S. Attorney General from
Haiti: A Slave Revolution, 200 Years after 1804.
Located just 700 miles from Miami, Haiti is a world away, socially and economically. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, it has some of the world’s worst health and development statistics:
- Only half the adult population is literate
- Life expectancy is only 53.7 years
- 80% of the population lives below the poverty line
- 50% of households live on less than $1/day
The desperate economic situation of most families leads to poor nutrition. No one is more vulnerable than young children, especially toddlers who are no longer breastfed but are too young to fend for themselves.
